EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
